About me
My Journey
Towards homemade marshmallows
My uncle introduced me to homemade marshmallows sometime back in the late 90s, the incredible ones made from City Bakery in Chelsea, NYC. This was at the time before Sex in the City made the spot notoriously famous. Several years later, I wandered in one day, craving a marshmallow and their hot chocolate, or rather, a cup of their amazingly thick, rich chocolate bisque-like drink. At this time the bakery had become very well-known from being featured on the show. The secret got out, and the bakery was packed, and I was a broke 20 something year old who didn’t feel like waiting in line that day and decided to save a few precious dollars. In any case, I walked out with no marshmallows and no hot chocolate, and thought, maybe I can make my own marshmallows.
Well, I did. At the time I had a hand mixer and no clue what I was doing, but I made my first batch. I got a little more serious about them when I moved to my next apartment. I bought a stand mixer and started to experiment with different flavors, I named my brand and got to work.
I have always been working in healthcare full time and considered this a side hobby.
It was 2020 and COVID that really led me to develop the business, trademark my Feathermallow name and put together a logo and a website. I had the time, and why not? I figured this could always be a fall back, and it kept me busy during the pandemic. I started to refine my flavors and menu.
I still work full time, as of 2023, I’m getting my doctorate in Health Education, with a focus on Global Ophthalmology, but I love making and being creative with my Feathermallows.
Heather is a Native New Yorker from Queens, and currently lives on the UES. When she is not busy working or making Feathermallows, she serves her cat, Perseus (master of the apartment).
